For students who have a limited amount of time available for language study, the Intensive Course offers more condensed content in a shorter period of time. It is presently offered seven times a year and varies in length from four to eight weeks.
Housing with a Costa Rican family is available for singles and couples, however we are not able to offer this service to families with children.
Non-missionary come with a full realization of the missionary nature and focus of the Spanish Language Institute and are expected to abide by the same high ethical and moral standards for which Institute students have been known through the years.
To apply for the Intensive Course, students must be at least 18 years of age and should provide us with a letter of recommendation from their pastor as part of the application process.
If we cannot place a particular student in a group, that person will receive the Intensive Course in an individualized mode for less time (an hour and a half) at the same price. If they wish to have more time with the teacher, they may request tutoring at a cost of $18 per session (50 minutes).
Classes normally meet Monday through Friday afternoons, from 12:35 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. Content is designed to be covered fairly rapidly, at each of the three basic levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. Group size is six students or less. Placement is determined through a short written test and an oral interview, both of which are given during Orientation.
Students are encouraged to go on weekend excursions or “paseos", in order to experience the culture and natural beauty of Costa Rica. They are welcome to participate in paseos organized by students in the Regular Course, or Institute staff can help them plan their own. During June and July, two special packages are available: guided excursions, led by Institute staff and volunteer service opportunities in a local ministry.
We have been overwhelmed by the amazing faculty, staff and administration at The Spanish Language Institute! The teachers were able to accommodate our personal learning styles as well as to ease us into the full immersion of living in Costa Rica. The staff and administration were always warm and kind and they always had encouraging words for us. They genuinely cared about our family and always wanted to make sure that we were doing well in all areas of our life here. We entered the institute with no Spanish and we are leaving with a solid foundation of understanding, speaking, and writing the language. We also gained the invaluable cultural experience of living in such a beautiful country!
