If you are hoping to use the Spanish language in cross cultural ministry, the Spanish Language Institute is the ideal place to pursue your interests. Since 1942, the Spanish Language Institute has helped over 16,000 missionaries achieve the language skills needed to serve the Lord in the Spanish-speaking world. But the Institute is much more than a language school. It is the ideal place to help you and your family transition from your home country to your field of service, offering help with housing, a school for the children, recreational facilities, pastoral counseling and the opportunity to fellowship with other missionaries who are preparing for service in Latin America.
It is our pleasure to present three new members of the pastoral counseling staff! It is a special blessing to have them with us while the McCutcheons are on study leave. Our new counselors plan to continue as part of the ILE Department of Counseling and Pastoral Care after Joel and Krista return.
Ken Resztak and Gordon and Debbie Crandell are here to offer emotional and spiritual support to our students and staff. You may contact them by appointment at the front desk in the administration building, or via email
Gordon, Debbie and Ken say, "If you have an emergency, you may call any one of us. We are here to serve you!"
Our teachers are committed to helping you understand and speak the "language of heaven". Our administrative staff is eager to assist you in transitioning into a new cultural setting. And our service providers are ready to show you around the beautiful country of Costa Rica, known for its complex ecosystems, conservation efforts, political neutrality and friendly people.
If you are coming with children, we have more good news! The Spanish Language Institute administers a grade school (pre-school, elementary and secondary) called Sojourn Academy, right on its campus. "Rayitos de Sol" day care center is also at your service for infants and toddlers.
The Institute's academic program is flexible enough to adjust to a wide range of proficiency levels, from beginning to advanced, as well as a variety of learning styles and preferences. In addition to the traditional classroom, we offer the FARO community language learning program, as well as individual tutoring.
The Institute is located in a suburb of the capital city of San José, right in the center of the country, less than 2 hours away from the Atlantic or Pacific coast. Everything from concert halls and shopping malls to typical restaurants and flea markets are only minutes away from our campus, which contains 14 buildings extending over an entire city block.
If you find that you have questions that are not answered on our website or if you would just like to make personal contact with us, please do not hesitate to call or write. We will be most happy to hear from you.
For most people, learning a foreign language is demanding. Learning Spanish when you are in your late 50s is an even greater challenge, one that is both rewarding and at times overwhelming. The Institute offers an incredibly supportive Christian environment in which to learn this beautiful and new language. The teachers and the staff are not only excellent instructors, they have become our friends. They want us to succeed and do everything they can to help us learn this language – and they’re good at it. They’ve been successfully teaching students for over 65 years and have a heart for missionaries. They laugh with us, cry with us, pray for and with us, and in the midst of all this, even at our age … we learn Spanish! In a short time, lifetime friendships are forged with the other students as we all prepare to spread out around the globe in Spanish speaking countries. We arrived speaking little or no Spanish and we have come leaps and bounds in our learning. Thank you the Institute for your wonderful programs! The school was recommended to us and we now understand why. Even though this is one of the hardest things we’ve ever done, we highly recommend the Institute to anyone wanting to learn Spanish!
