Intensive Courses
For students who have a limited amount of time available for language study, the Intensive Course offers more condensed content in a shorter period of time. It is presently offered seven times a year and varies in length from four to eight weeks.
Housing with a Costa Rican family is available for singles and couples, however we are not able to offer this service to families with children.
Students are encouraged to go on weekend excursions or “paseos, in order to experience the culture and natural beauty of Costa Rica. They are welcome to participate in paseos organized by students in the Regular Course, or Institute staff can help them plan their own. During June and July, two special packages are available: guided excursions, led by Institute staff and volunteer service opportunities in a local ministry.
To apply for the Intensive Course, students must be at least 18 years of age and should provide us with a letter of recommendation from their pastor.
Individual Attention
If we cannot place a particular student in a group, that person will receive the Intensive Course in an individualized mode for less time (an hour and a half) at the same price. If they wish to have more time with the teacher, they may request tutorign at a cost of $18 per session (50 minutes).
Academic Program
Classes normally meet Monday through Friday afternoons, from 12:35 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. Content is designed to be covered fairly rapidly, at each of the three basic levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. Group size is 6 students or less. Placement is determined through a short written test and an oral interview, both of which are given during Orientation.
- Students are expected to actively participate in class and be open to correction.
- Homework is assigned each day, and it is expected that students will spend at least 3 hours a day in language learning activities outside of class.
- Books and other materials are provided.
- Students receive grades for this course and a certificate at the end of the course.
How to Obtain College Credit
Many students have received college credit for studies completed at the Spanish Language Institute. You will need to give your university a copy of your transcript and a description of the courses that you took. Both of these can be obtained from the Institute’s Academic Director. (Transcripts cost $10.) If possible, check with your university’s Spanish department chairperson before coming to the Institute. If they have any questions about the program, invite them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Institute will arrange airport pick-up and housing with a Costa Rican family, for those who request it.
It amazes me how far-reaching is the good reputation of ILE. I’ve met ticos from as far away as Alajuela who were familiar with the Institute. Lest it seem that there is not a commitment to Spanish, my tico mom (who has had experience with other language schools) told me “they really know what they are doing”. I’ve found this to be very true. The teachers are so knowledgeable and the class sizes create an ideal learning environment. The process and pace that the Institute provides is so considerate of the students involved. The teachers and authorities are so trustworthy and helpful.
