It is best to have a U. S. checking account if possible (if not you
will still be able to obtain money, but not at as many places). You can obtain money by
writing personal checks,
or you could use a Debit/Credit Card and use the
automatic teller machines here.
The ATM's here do not charge a fee, but your stateside bank may. Check
with your bank or credit card company to verify fees.
Your Big Brother/Sister will show you how it all works on this end when you arrive. It is recommended that you bring enough money in money orders, or cash to cover one month's living expenses.
We recommend that you do not use Traveler's Checks as most students have found them to be a bit difficult to exchange. The few banks that will accept them also charge a $5.00 fee to exchange them.
